On RK Salai, 7th Street, Chennai, there is a kalyana mandapam. We live next door. There is a wedding on an average 6 to 7 days in a month. For this, preparations for loading and unloading goods begins the night before and the day the wedding is over the goods are cleared in the night itself. For both jobs the timing is always after 10pm. There are noisy vehicles with reverse horns coming and going. The vans bring noisy vessels and gas cylinders and in the night it is impossible to sleep. The cooks in the balcony scream and shout to each other while preparing for the next day. The flowers for decorating are put up without fail at 1.30 to 2pm. This is half an hour of hitting nails and it is like somebody is breaking our heads. The flats next door have a majority of senior citizens and it is impossible to sleep. Is it fair that we have to lose our sleep for 10 days in a month or more? How can a mandapam be allowed so close to a residence? In fact there is a school next door and during the daytime the noise level is so bad it is impossible to have a minute of silence.
I feel citizens in this country have no rights to ask for even a good nights sleep. We have spoken to the mandapam and requested for reduction of noise but they do not seem to be bothered. Please help and advise what we can do.
