Thugs of 21st Century
I’m an Indian national and a first-time importer based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I entered into an agreement with Mr. Kunal Jain of Majestic Basmati Rice Mandideep, Madhya Pradesh to supply three containers of Golden Sella 1121 and Creamy Sella 1122 Basmati rice for the amount of 80, 000 USD. We made the first part of the payment of 16, 000$ on 31/12 and the second part of the payment of 64, 000$ through the Letter of Credit on 30/01. The consignment arrived in Saudi Arabia on 18/03 and was released from the customs on 27/03/208.
Upon supplying the consignment to the retailers, more than a dozen of them returned the item with the same complaint that the basmati has reduced volume upon cooking due to what they suspected was an adulteration of Golden Sella and Creamy Sella with cheaper versions of basmati. We immediately contacted the producers who assured us cooperation but have since delayed any action. We were finally compelled to get a third party inspection done by Cotecna International in New Delhi whose report I’m enclosing. The report is self explanatory and it clearly mentions that a deliberate 14.30% adulteration of Golden Sella 1121 with a cheaper variety of Basmati 1509.
This very clearly violates the internationally accepted levels of admixture of less than 4%.
This ordeal has resulted in me being stuck with 75, 000 kgs of rice worth 80, 000/USD in Riyadh and having made the payment in full to Majestic Basmati. The expected loss would be to the tune of USD 9, 000 which as a young first-time exporter will result in the discontinuance of my business even before it’s begun. Because of above reason I couldn’t sell even one bag of rice and after 3 months I was shocked to find out that even quantity of the rice bags which should have been 40kgs of weight, none of bags were more than 37.5 Kgs. Way they have treated me and ruined my business one word for them "Thugs of 21st Century”.
