My friends and I are staying in a flat in Pimple Saudagar, Pune. We found the apartment through a broker (Sai Sahib) and paid him the brokerage he asked. The rent agreement period was a year. On Feb 28, the validity of rent agreement was getting over. The owner of the apartment is in Bangalore. We talked to the owner and discussed on renewing the rent agreement. He suggested a hike in rent by 5% and we agreed to that. He agreed on the rent agreement renewal also. But, the broker who helped us find the apartment is asking for his brokerage during renewal of the flat. We refused to give as this is illegal. Rent renewal is an agreement between the tenants and the owner. We told the owner that we will renew with the help of a notary, and we won't be able to give the broker commission. This broker threatened us telling that he will vacate us from the house then itself and told the owner of the flat that we are indecent girls. He told the owner that he will find good tenants for him who will pay a high rent and threatened us a lot telling he will vacate us then itself, and abused us a lot. Now the owner has given us notice to leave the house though already he had agreed for rent revision and renewal of rent agreement. We belong to decent families and work in reputed firms. We have come to Pune only for work, but the broker has been treating us like dogs. This is totally unacceptable.
