Locking of Doors, Passanger Harrassment

Cars & Transport

Dear Sir,

This letter is with reference to the suggestion by Station Superintendent, Ludhiana Junction.

Through this letter, it is intended to share ordeal faced by the passengers of Shane Punjab from Ludhiana to Amritsar dated 15th July at 12.15pm. The train which was already runnning late of its scheduled time reached Ludhiana Junction railway station at Platform No.3. I was waiting for the same on the platform, and the moment the train came to a halt, we were faced with a situation that all the doors of the train were locked from inside.

When I along with other passengers requested the commuters on board, they refused to open the doors as they mentioned they were going for Sangrand. With repeated requests to the passengers on board, none of the passengers tried opening the doors, on the contrary they abused the people wanting to board the train. Some of the passengers from Ludhiana even stood on the door while the train started moving putting their life in danger, and still the passengers refused to entertain any requests.

As witnessed, the train was half empty, and most of the people doing shabad keertan in the train refused to even consider the fact that the people at Ludhiana station were waiting for the train since half an hour, and considering the weather most of them were on the verge of getting dehydrated while repeatedly requesting the commuters to open the doors. When the people on board were asked to pull the chain once the train started leaving ludhiana station, they were not able to do the needful because of the bullying by other passengers on board. The compartments as told were reserved for the pilgrims, but that doesnt entitle them with an authority to close all the doors of train. I had to reach my University for an important exam which I have missed because of the attitude of pilgrims on board.

As a citizen of world's biggest democracy, and forming a part of the educated class of the society, I went through a sad state of our system where no one was ready to help, none of the station employees were seen around platform no.3 and when contacted on platform no.1 kept sending me to different authorities. Since the train will go through multiple halts before it reaches Amritsar, I requested the authorities to make it sure that such a scenario is not repeated at other stations.

Through this letter I want to bring this to the notice of the higher authorities about the ordeal faced by everyday passengers on the railway stations on the name of celebrating a holy day. There must be people between us for whom reaching Amritsar could have been crucial, but the indifferent passengers on board created a nighmare for all of us, the sorry state of state run railways was witnessed by all the passengers on platform no.3 and still no action was taken by the authorities on the station. I request the authorities to consider my request so that we are not put into this situation anymore.

Kind regards,

Karan Bawa
