Confiscation of Debit card

Recently, i had visited Bazaar Kolkata at VIP road and made some purchases. I produced my axis bank debit card which, i did not notice, had expired and hence the transaction was declined. The shop owners tried to confiscate the card and mentioned they had such instructions from the bank. The bank has denied any such authorisation to any shop for confiscation of customers' card under any circumstances, as the authority and power to do so lies with the bank and police. On demanding to see the authorisation in writing, the shop had failed to show something tangible and confined their claims to verbal domain only.
They even resorted to gross misbehavior and manhandling when the debit card, which could have been put to misuse, was demanded back.
