Membership fee levied after cancelling the card

Hi,

I had HSBC Silver card for past 3 years. I never used it.3 weeks back I got a call from an executive telling that my card will be cancelled as it is dormant. I said to cancel it and cut the card into peices. Now I got a bill stating that I ahve to pay for the Annual Membership fee of Rs.700.The cutomer care says that my card is not yet cancelled and I have to pay the bill. I think this is blatant cheating and fraud by HSBC. Since I was under an impression that my card is cancelled I didnt even bother about it. Now all of a sudden they levy Membership fee for a card which was given as lifetime free card to me.

Can anyone tell me what I can do about this. I am ready for a legal battle also.
