Extra charge

I got a statement having around Rs. 515 outstanding on my credit card. I deposited Rs. 550. But again HSBC is charging about Rs.440 saying it was a late payment. Even if it is a late payment (say 10 days), how can they charge them Rs. 440. HSBC said it is their rule, if i have Rs. 1 due they will charge me Rs 400.
