PAN cancelled

I got my PAN in the year 1999 with the number ABTPA0180D and had been fileing my returns since the year 2000 on the same number. Recently I lost my PAN card and applied for duplicate card. My application was returned and on enquiring I was told that the number has been cancelled. I am at a loss to understand why and when was my PAN cancelled. The Income Tax web site shows my PAN with remark to meet my assessing officer and my assessing oficers asked me to apply for new PAN which I don't want as I have to submit copy of last three years return to get bank loan.

I want my PAN to be made operational and have also talked to Ayekar Sampark Kendra but they were unable to provide proper guidance.

My complaint to Incomr Tax Deptt. is why my pAN was cancelled without any intimation to me and that it should be made operational.
