Why charge extra for payment by credit card

I went to Airtel shop in Pune the other day to buy USB modem. The cost was Rs 3000. I wanted to pay by credit card. I was told that there will be an extra charge of 2.5 % for paying by credit card. Why? Why should there be any extra charge for paying by credit card. What are the customer rights in this respect?
