Conversion from post paid to prepaid

I am having a post paid Airtel mobile connection for the last two years. Now i want to convert it to pre paid. I received a reply from airtel customer care that the procedure for converstion is that the customer have to submit identity proof and photo to the airtel outlet/service centre.

I am really surprised to know this. Having not known my credentials, how Airtel is offering me Post paid Services? If i am opting for the same services provider for a pre paid service, why should i submit the ID proof again?
