Locking of air tel sim

I am an old prepaid customer of airtel. My number was 9892084913 and today my mobile is misplaced. I want to block my sim. I dont know why I cannot block this sim with my ID proof?? I called on the number the message the number you are trying is not reachable, please try after sometime and perhaps it is switched off.am I responsible if there is any misuse of my number?? I just want to block it and the balance amount may please be transferred to my duplicate sim to be provided by the company.
