Fraud from Airtel prepaid

I had taken airtel lifetime prepaid connection after submitting all the documents from Airtel Stores and the number alloted by them was 9975453744. It worked for few days and suddenly stopped working. Today when I went to the shop and enquired about the same, they said they don't know anything. Then I called 999 and came to know that the number was discontinued. I had a balance of Rs.900 in that phone which they refused to refund. I don't understand how a company like airtel can do such frauds (giving the connection and then forfeiting customer's money?)
