Recently we, a group of 13 people (9 adults and 4 kids) traveled to Andaman for an 8 nights and 9 days trip between 25th Dec to 2nd Jan and had the most harrowing time. We were charged Rs.14, 500 per head and we paid about 1, 29, 000/- to Onlookers Travel address is: 11, Mahendra Goswami Lane,

Girish Park, Kolkata – 700 006.Tel: 91 33 2257 2703 / 9836019190 / 9830082837 / 9830505192 / 9339147487. They had forwarded the work to Andaman Tours and Travel in Port Balir. This cost did not include food and only had lodging, travel and entry tickets or boat or ferry or launch rides.

The day we arrived in Port Blair on the 25th Dec evening after a 4 hour delay of the Jetlite flight the hotel (Blair Hotel) we were checked into was nothing short of being a dilapidated structure on which somehow a few beds and some toilets were adjusted. It was a completely depressing moment for us as after such a long travel from Delhi we are put up in such a shady and ramshackle building which had extremely smelly rooms, non-AC, and filthy toilets. This was perhaps the first whiff of things to come. We somehow forced him to change us to a different hotel and we were put up at Hotel Maya, which seemed a shade better than what we earlier had. But this was on the 3rd floor with no lifts and with a house built within the hotel. In the next nine days we had to live with a rude and discourteous set of drivers, similar set of shady hotels infected with spiders, cockroaches, rats, bad behaviour of the hotel staff, smelly rooms, horrible toilets and all of them had rack rates of 500-800/- which was quite a surprise considering that he was paid a substantial sum of money for putting us in atleast a 2-star property or least a clean toilet and a bed.

In addition the tour operator did not show us the important locations that had to be shown and also at times lied about certain destinations that it was closed etc. etc. Places like mud volcano, turtle park, Jolly buoy etc. as stated in the itinerary were never shown or sometimes the driver lied to us.

Finally, at Havelock we were badly insulted by the hotel owner and we had to put down our foot and had a major argument with the tour operator.

But I must say that people should be careful with selection of tour operators because unfortunately we are at their mercy once we land up at the place.
