Rat menace

I have a Wagon R. Often rat enters the vehicle and damages the seat covers, paper documents such as insurance copy, RC Book copy, workshop bills etc. I discussed the matter with the service personnel. But they give a cool reply that rats entering the vehicle is common to all brands and there is a gap in every car sufficient enough for rats to enter in.

Will anybody let me know whether it is true that rat menace is common to all vehicle. Also suggest me some ideas to keep rat out of reach.
