IPhone 3G - Operator locking foreve

Hello,

I had bought an iPhone 3G two years back. Since then, I have been trying to followup with Apple, Airtel and the distributor who sold me the phone on unlocking the iPhone so that I can use the phone with service providers other than Airtel.

I was told to wait for an year and approach Airtel to unlock the phone (legally) as I was told that only Airtel can unlock the phone after the warranty period.

When I approached Airtel after an year, I was made to go around in circles between Airtel, Apple and Imagine (distributor who sold me the phone).

Even now, I have not been able to get any resolution on the same.

Please let me know how I can get any kind of reprieve in such a case.
