Recruitment criteria

I have applied for a position which mentioned in the advertisement for the position Project assistant, that consideration will be given to first 50 candidates and the application deadline in 10th of July, 5p.m.

I submitted my application on the 8th of July. I received an e-mail on the 14th of July that I was not selected. When I asked to be provided with further details regarding the denial of my application I was told I was not amongst the first 50 candidates who applieed for this poisition.

Is it correct this reason??
