Consumer No. 020012259086

Excess Billing in pretext of Faulty Meter
Dear Sir,
I am consumer No. 020012259086 of M.S.E.D Co. Ltd. As I and my family were away in November the electric unit consumed showed 1 unit, but billed for 142 units (Ref. Meter reading in Meter No. 9000359002 shown in picture for November). Copies of Meter readings as shown in electric bills are attached for your perusal.
Excess billing for 142 units against consumption of 1 unit as shown in meter, is grossly unfair. Reason stated was faulty meter. I have personally explained that electric consumption is almost nil in November because of no occupancy. Please see my letter dated 29-11, which was acknowledged.
However, in December the electric consumption shown in meter was 27 units and I was billed for 27 units. Had the Meter been faulty, it would not have shown 27 units consumption.
I therefore the Officials concerned to reverse the faulty entry of 142 units of November and accordingly give credit to my account for the Rs. 200/- already paid by me.
I appreciate if the matter of unfair excess billing is resolved at the earliest.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
A.S.Narayanan

Q 1. Why MSEDCL is asking for additional security deposit?
Ans 1. As per condition of supply, all State Electricity Boards are empowered to collect security deposit from their consumers.
Security Deposit is necessary because all consumer pay their bill after consumption of electricity. They pay only after they receive bill for their consumption in previous month. They are also given a period of 10 to 15 days to pay the bill. Even if any consumer does not pay the bill, his supply can be cut only after serving him a notice and after giving a period of 15 days to make the payment. Thus a non - paying consumer can use electricity for about 2 months. To avoid losses in such cases, security deposit equivalent to electricity consumption of one month is collected from every monthly billed domestic consumer. This period may vary as per the duration of the billing.
Lately, MSEDCL has revised his tariff. So, additional security deposit as per revised tariff is necessary. It may also be mentioned here that MSEDCL pays interest on the security deposit of Rs. 50 or more at the rate equal to the post office saving bank rate as may be in the force from time to time.
