Electric power steering

I bought a brand new fiesta on 30/06/09.On the 1st of July I was driving round a roundabout when the electric power steering failed with no warning, it went from light to very heavy and I was unsure whether I would be able to turn the wheel enough to get me out of trouble. I came within inches of having a serious accident. Is this a problem with fiesta as I feel it is likely to result in somebody being killed. I have always had Ford cars with no serious problems to report this experience has really shaken me up, so much so that I don't think I want the car back
