HDFC Bank offered me a zero balance account when I opened an FD.It was then suggested that I apply for mutual funds using the FD, which I did. Repeated enquries over the phone and personally at the bank assured me that the account was a zero balance account. Now I come to know that I have been charged nearly Rs.900 every quarter for not keeping the min. balance. This, when I have a salary account in which the amount far exceeds double the minimum balance. Had I known, I would have easily transferred the required amount from my salary account to this account. But I was in the dark. Again, I was told that I was not entitled to get an account statement as I had opted for netbanking. So, it was a while by the time I discovered that the Bank had been charging this amount every quarter. Now they tell me that I was entitled to get the account statement and that it was my fault that I did not follow up to find out why I was not getting the statement. The bank did not deem it fit to inform me when the balance went into negative. But they say that they have sent me letters regarding this (which I have never received). If I had received the letters would I still persist in maintaining negative balance and donate money to the bank (Rs. 900/quarter) when I had enough money in my salary account to maintain more than the min. balance in both the accounts? It does look like the bank is out to cheat people.
