Lost of mobile

Sir,

I am serving in indian Army for last nine years. I lost my Nokia 5300 phone during my leave at lucknow. somebody told me that manufacturer can trace the handset with IMEI number of the handset.

please do let me know whether it is possible to trace the handset or not.
