Delay in mobile number cancellation

I recently cancelled two post paid airtel mobile numbers in Bangalore since I got transferred to chennai. Airtel took 8 days to cancel the account and they are charging rental charges for those days. They are calling multiple times and sending multiple mails to retain the number. The question is why should I pay for the rent during that period. Is there not a time period within which they should cancel the number.
