Train scheduled to half of it's root without intimation

I purchased a ticket on 30nov 09 on train 3049 (Amritsar Express) and PNR No is 6335038385.The train was from Howrah to Lucknow and journey date was 9th jan 10 last. The train was changed upto Mogulsarai and there was no information. On 8th jan 10, I shocked to see the train was changed. I was tensed as with me was my mother who is 64 of age. I had a important meeting on 9th jan last in lucknow and it was very emergency to me to return on that day. Shall I not able to ask the Indian Railway to pay me compensation for the above shameful incident?
