Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that affects the production of normal haemoglobin (a type of protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the tissues in the body). It can be inherited from two normal, yet thalassemia trait carrier (thalassemia minor) parents who might be totally oblivious of this trait until they have a thalassemia major child. If treated and managed well these patients can have a normal life in which they can marry and have normal children and live upto a normal lifespan as any other person.
