Respected Sir,
I am Pavan Nishad, a Final Year B. Tech. student from NIT Calicut.
This matter is regarding the terrible mismanagement of hostel
facilities which are an essential part of the college life. As such
this may not be an urgent matter on hand as the ministry is busy
expanding the number of seats in the esteemed colleges of national
repute - but it is the smaller details when fixed that will give the
desired result.
The faculty has been promising the construction of a "Mega Hostel"
which would house 1000 students. However, from our experience we have
learned that the promises are merely an excuse put forward by the
faculty to hoodwink us into accepting sub standard rooms. To further
diminish the quality, we have to accommodate one person extra than the
room was designed for.
We have been staying four people in a room meant for three people.
Even Prof. Ramanujan would not be able to come up with a geometrical
solution of providing floor space to four beds and four study tables
in these rooms. Even if he employs the third dimension, we have lost
faith in our faculty/administration that they would be able to
implement the solution.
Do you want us engineers of the esteemed NIT Calicut to write a rant
filled mail? We won't. But the fact that we kept our "furniture" out
of the room and used mats instead to sleep in the room does show some
negligence on their part.
Right now, we had been promised single room for each final year
student. After the confirmation, we received a last week notice that
we will have to stay in double rooms, again. It's not a question of
luxury - it's a question of how closely we can mimic the environment
of a prison cell. As engineers, we have to imagine the future of the
nation. Does the MHRD want us to think of ourselves as criminals
huddled up in prison cell and wonder about our lives?
The faculty, like always, has started it's three year old propaganda
that the Mega Hostel will be completed within four months. Does the
faculty under estimate us so much that they think we can be duped
every time like a stubborn child is duped with a lollypop? Not one
brick has been laid for the mega hostel after the foundation stone.
How are we to trust them in this claim?
There is a lot of negligence in NIT Calicut. We have had two months
wherein there was no security guard at any hostel. They were on a
strike at the main gate. How professional is it?
Please take such small matters seriously. Because once they get out of
hand, you have to bring the pieces together and stich them to get the
larger piece. Why wait for damage to happen?
