Attitude of Immigration Officer at CSI Airport in Mumbai

This is to inform you the ordeal I had at the immigration counter at CSI Airport in Mumbai, on 23rd August at around 07:00pm.

I was directed to stand 14 for my immigration formalities. On approaching the counter, I kept three passports on the counter, two belonging to my children. The immigration attendant told me that only one passenger at a time allowed for immigration formality. I told him fair enough he can check one passport at a time. He told me not to place any passports on the counter, and children should be kept separately. I asked him when children accompany the mother how can they go separately, and why is it so? Rudely he said it was a new rule. He was very arrogant and not approachable.

I have been travelling for 20years, passing thru the immigration process, and this was indeed a very painful experience at CSI, Mumbai. I made it very clear to the person at the counter that he had no right to raise his voice on me, who is a representative of the Govt. of India, hence not doing any favour on us!! On enquiring his name, he told his name was Jayant.

I did tell him that we do not have respect in our own country!!

I was unable to understand, how he carried out his responsibilities. He was arrogant, inhuman and rude. As for him children should go independently and mother separately When he could not see my second child, who is about to be 6years, I asked him, you cannot see the child from your seat and you want him to go thru the immigration formality independently, what kind of a rule you talk about? He argued that the elder son should go separately then, and he made my elder son stand behind him. I strongly object his behavior and he has no right to deal with us in this manner.

When I addressed this issue to the person in charge there, the reply was that “I cannot say anything listening to you”, but had no courtesy to find out why did the person at the counter behaved arrogantly. Is this the way, they have been asked to deal with issues? Are they not educated and trained enough to behave diligently?

On the contrary, when I landed at the Dubai International Airport, since we were a family, we were let go on a priority, even though my husband was with us (who joined us after the immigration at Mumbai, as we travelled from M’lore via Mumbai, and my husband checked in at Mumbai). All four Passports were taken at a time and immigration formalities were completed within 5minutes with a smile and welcome note. While exiting the airport with our luggage, we were asked to carry on without having screened our luggage. The politeness and well behavior at Dubai made my children say they loved Dubai. This means that, we Indians have more respect in foreign countries than in our own country.

We NRI’s pay the price for behavior of some of the uncivilized and uncultured Immigration Employees at the International Airport and there seems to be no authority to put an end to this issue.

Through this letter, I would appreciate, if an enquiry is made on Jayant and an action taken against his attitude, so that such kind of behavior is not repeated by him or any of other immigration employees at the Airport!

Look forward to your reply.

Best Regards

Gladys Dias
