Ga. Dept. Of Corrections
Employee treatment

I was asked to resign and told I'd be given a bad work reference if they terminated me. I had asked for a reasonable accomodation in at least 3 closed door meetings, due to my clinical depression and I stated that night shift aggravated this condition, and this was ignored. Correctional Officers frequently work in dormitories that are not air conditioned while the administrative staff do have air conditioning. Also, Officers are frequently required to work two dormitories by themselves when policy calls for one officer per Dorm and this at a time when the buildings housing these dorms have no control room officers either. There are hardly any fire drills run. Our comp time is manipulated and our time sheets shredded to avoid paying us at the end of the year for said comp time. The Warden engages in nepotism, giving her relatives preferential treatment. Smokers are given priority on breaks during long 12 hour shifts. Many times, certain units do not have dedicated supervisors and rely on supervisors from other units, and there is not enough help in the event of an emergency on the overnight shift. We have maintenance staff who also maintain Officer certifications and they are never called upon to help during staff shortages. Very frequently we have scabies outbreaks and have to isolate certain dorms, and last year, quarrantine the entire facility. Officers were expected to work almost the equivalent of two full time jobs that week we were quarrantined to help out, but were not offered preventive care, and had to just hope for the best. The warden and her staff only made token appearances while the rest of us toughed it out. Supervisors are frequently abusive and incompetent. We had an entry level officer acting as a disciplinary judge. We frequently have situations where the proper procedures are not followed in job postings and poilitical favorites are just given the jobs. A terrible place to work
