Sir,

Sub: Request for replacing water meter - free of cost

A couple of days ago, when we were inside the house, some anti-social elements, tried to break the water meter by throwing a heavy stone. After hearing the noise, by the time I came out, they ran out. Only later, I could realise that they have tried to break and steal the water meter fitted by BWSSB. As the pipe got damaged during the water flow, all the water started leaking throughout my house. Hence, with great difficulty, within a time period of two hours, I could get a plumber and the spare parts and the repair was carried out at the earliest.

But, the next day, when the water meter reader [Ramalinga], visited the house, he refused to take the readings and has mentioned "door locked" as the reason for not taking the reading. When I asked the reason, he says, even though the meter is in working condition, as the glass is damaged, he cannot take the reading. But why he mentioned "DOOR LOCKED" is worth enquiring by your team.

On enquiry with my neighbours, I came to know that the water meter in my house is old enough. These old meters have been replaced by BWSSB itself over a period of time in our area - AT NO EXTRA COST. The reason being that the old meter has brass worth more than one KG - and hence gets scrap value for the anti social elements / thieves. The new meter has brass just about 0.25 KG and usually not aimed by thieves / anti social elements.

I have another complaint also to be made. The water supply itself is not sufficient. For a whole month, the water that passes through the meter is hardly 6 to 8 K litres - which is not even sufficient for a small family. This results in me getting hard water supplied by local bore wells at Rs. 325 /=, once a week. As such, my water bill per month for a family of four, works out to more than Rs.1400/=, which is abnormal.

In view of the above, I request you to arrange to replace the water meter and parallelly take reading from the old meter which is STILL IN WORKING CONDITION!

As the present meter is still in working condition, and the damage to the glass is beyond my control [for which I have already spent Rs.350/= for repairs], I request that the meter be replaced free of cost and this should not affect my regular monthly bills by mentioning "door locked". Mr. Ramalinga, the meter reader may be charge sheeted are suitably warned for the glaring error commited by him.

Thanking you in anticipation,

[VS Ramanujan]
