Charging after closing the account

I was using HSBC credit card (4476 9299 8659 7521) for the last two years and when I joined the executives who came to me told that this card is life time free (no annual fees). When I got the statement of March 09, it was found that the fees for my card as well as my add on card was charged by the HSBC.Immediately I contacted the customercare and requested them to cancel my cards. They told me to pay the bill after deducting the charges of the card which I was done. But, in the next month I got the bill and found that besides the charges of the card plus finance charges plus service charges etc which I have already informed and confirmed by the customercare of the bank that my card had been cancelled. Moreover in the statement itself it is written that you have cancelled your account. Whilst we are entitled to demand payment of the total balance outstanding.

Kindly help me to get out of this.
