Allotment of side berths in railways

I booked a ticket through internet in 6526 kanyakumari express for a journey on 1st july. The availability at the time of booking (10th june) was 292 berths. I gave my preference as lower berth. After the payment is made the allotment of berth is sm 80. For aged people getting into that side berths is very painful. Why such allotment is made when there are 292 berths available. Any berths other than side berths would have been ok. This is the third time it is happening to me. I had to cancel the tickets everytime thereby losing money. At the ticket booking counters they can see which are available berths, so that the customer can take a decision whether to book or not. Why this facility is not availble when you book through IRCTC in the internet.

The then Railway minister had announced more than 6 months back removing the side middle berths. The side middle berths are continuing in 2nd class sleeper. Is there any hope for a change in the system so that the customer can have a choice of berth instead of alloting some berth other than preferred.
