MV Rezzak tragedy: Search operation all at sea

A fresh search operation by the Turkish authorities to trace any possible survivors of the Panamanian registered ship MV Rezzak that went missing in the Black Sea on February 18 with 25 Indian crew on board is yet to yield any result.

The Turkish authorities had revived the abandoned search operation following a request by New Delhi [ Images ].

"We are collecting evidence from the ship-owner, authorities, cargo vessel owners, our consulate in Russia [ Images ] and Turkey to draw a certain conclusion, " a top shipping official said.

Asked about the possibility of survival, he said, "It is not possible to say anything at this juncture."

India [ Images ] cannot send a rescue team to Black Sea because the missing vessel has been registered in Panama, he added.

"However, we are sending one person to be part of a joint investigation that would be carried out by Panaman authority, " he said.

India had asked Turkey on Tuesday to continue with the search and rescue operation three days after it was abandoned as no wreckage of the ship was found.

The Turkish Coast Guard have restarted their search and rescue operation and no wreckage or floating debris of the ship has been found till the last report came on Thursday afternoon, according to a statement of Directorate General of Shipping.

"The report of accident of the ship still remains unconfirmed, " Nautical Surveyor Deepak Kapoor said in the statement.

Turkish authorities carrying out search and rescue operation of a ship, which went missing in the Black Sea on February 18 with 25 Indian crew on board, have found a few items belonging to the vessel.

The rescue team has found a life raft, life jackets, tarpaulins, gas cylinders, sea survival kit, buoys and lifeboats, according to a press release from the Directorate General of Shipping.

However, the release added that nothing denoting the fate of those on board was found.

MV Rezzak had left Russia’s Novorossisk port on February 17 on a 24-hour journey to Turkey’s Bartin port. It was carrying steel billets.

Quoting the Governor of Bartin, the statement said the weather on February 16 and 17 was “very bad”.

MV Rezzak is a 100 metres long ship with a large engine capacity, which enables it to carry a large quantity of fuel on board, the DG said.
