We are ex-trainees of National Institute of Social Defence, (NISD) Delhi, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India. We selected as trainees through long process of All India common aptitude Test (CAT) and group discussion and Personal Interviews. We completed our course and training program including field survey, block placement in old age homes, Dissertation and seminar presentation in front of government officials from various fields. We serve for welfare services for Senior citizens under project “National Initiative on care for Elderly”(NICE) which is the part of National Policy on Older Persons (NPOP) formulated by Govt. of India, in January, 1999 wherein all aspects of the concerning the aged have been addressed. The ministry of social Justice and empowerment launched that unique project “National Initiative on care for elderly (NICE) through National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) in with the basic purpose to prepare a team of skilled and committed geriatric animators and professionals to plan and provide services for the expanding population of older persons. Under this project initially NISD organized Training of Trainer (TOT) programmes to prepare master trainers and 3 month Training programme for capacitating the NGO functionaries, later the 3 month training programe was upgraded to 6 month Certificate course in geriatric care and one year PG-DIPLOMA course. The students are trained for handling ethical issues in Geriatric Care and different practical tools deal with the problems of older persons. In consequence with the National Policy on Older Persons (NPOP), the ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched that unique project “National Initiative on care for Elderly “(NICE) to enhance the delivery of care to the elderly in de-institionalised setting through NISD, an autonomous body of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, in 2000 which has been engaged in formulation and development of projects and programmes in the field of old age care. The focus of the project is on creating awareness, identification of the needs, targeted intervention and optimizing capabilities to improve the quality of life of the elderly.
In case of 1 yr PG-DIPLOMA candidates possessing Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, psychology, Nursing etc. final selection for admission is made through CAT held on All India Basis followed GD/PI. There given career prospects as welfare/project/teacher/officers in NGOs, Government, Corporate, and Academics Sectors.
In case of 6 month Certificate course possessing 10th standard and final selection for admission is made through CAT followed by GD/PI. As per prospectus this course aims at developing team of skilled and committed professional to work as geriatric animators and to generate skilled manpower focused on intervention in the family and community setting. The course also projects to identify and promote support systems and networking for care of the older persons. The methodology of the courses are an appropriate mix of theoretical sessions with field exposure and practical training to build up knowledge, attitude and skills in the field of Geriatric care (old age care). To maximize learning, the methodology includes a variety of methods like small group activities, case studies, role-play, participatory activities, presentations and lectures, hospital/institutional visit, individual assignments and panel discussions, Inputs of the best practices of working with elderly are also provided to the students by national level experts in Geriatrics. As part of course curriculum the students are placed with old age homes, age care institutions and some selected homes for the elderly, besides an extensive door-to-door survey to collect data. The survey is basically meant to identify the realistic needs of the elderly perceived by the elderly themselves. There career opportunities for 6 month caregivers as Health worker, Project assistant, Assistant- Mobile Medical Unit, relief worker, Hospital Attendant, Physiotherapy assistant, Social worker etc. in NGOs, Government, Corporate sectors.
Since in 8 centers of the NISD in India produced 1077 care givers and Age care Professionals (6 months and 1 yr PG Diploma) till date but maximum of them are unemployed. Due to that cause there some action to be needed as social justice for us as follows:
1. This our earnest request that we spent our valuable period to acquire this training from NISD under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on demand good future but unemployed till date. We need Employment of geriatric animators in central govt. health services or welfare department as govt. employee to relief from mental anxiety for years.
2. To prepare Technical Advisory committee for monitoring old age homes, multiplex, residential apartments, Tours and Travels system, capital market investment, Healthcare, Insurance sector in India with support from geriatric animators and professionals of NISD.
3. To implement National Policy on Older Persons (NPOP) as early as possible in every district of India with support from Geriatric animators of NISD.
4. To open geriatric wards and clinics in govt. hospitals in primary, secondary and tertiary set up with support of PRI and geriatric animators.
5. To start “Integrated old age Development scheme” (IODS) for senior citizen on old age pension distribution, primary healthcare, Antyodaya Yojana and recreational activities fro senior citizen by the help of geriatric animators of NISD.
6. To recognize Geriatric Animators and professionals of NISD as Legalized “worker” and social security under National classification of occupations – 2004 under division -2/Group 244/Family 2446 of Ministry of Labour and Employment of Central Govt. and state Govt.
