Home Town "Design & Build' Service
Sad Experience

Dear Mr. Kishore Biyani,

I was attracted to the ads & the promotional broacher of Home Town “Design & Build” service, & felt like it was answer to my prayers to have a professional service which takes away all my botherations & delivers me happiness with redesigned home.

I approached Home Town, Noida for redesigning of my bathroom but what followed was – to put it mildly – was nothing but a nightmare, which I would not forget in hurry. Story is little longish, please bear with me.

A. INORDINATE DELAYS

Right from the beginning, the delays, lack of interest & apathy was apparent. Only I did not take it seriously, which now looking back I think I should have. The design proposals were delayed, mails were not replied, so on & so forth. Design proposals were being prepared without visiting the site or even without discussing with me to understand my needs, expectations etc. I had to literally force them to listen to it.

I was initially informed that whenever I finalise the deal, the work would start in 2-3 days. However, after finalizing the design, & purchasing of the required material (shower enclosure, vanity, pot, tiles etc. etc.), on 22 May when I requested them to start the work, I was told that they do not have the contractor available, & it would take at least a week – 10 days. On 29 May when I insisted that the work has to start immediately, I was assured by the concerned persons that the work would start from 3 June. Nothing happened on 3 rd june, nobody came, no call from Home Town, nothing. To my queries, some lame excuses were given. After much follow up, ultimately the work started on 6 June, after two weeks from the day I gave them go-ahead.

Earlier during the discussions, I was informed that the work would be completed in 8-10 days, slowly slowly it was increased to 12-15 days. In the final mail from the Home Town it was increased to 15-20 days. And finally the contractor informed it will take 25 days – all this for a bathroom not more than 8 x 8 ft!! {I had got my complete three bedroom flat done up (with flooring, plastering of all walls, reconstructing the two bathrooms, adding lofts, wood work, etc. in just four months} At every assurance I requested them to confirm their commitment, but sadly I did not receive it at all. So much for the professional approach!!

B. NON PROFESSIONAL WAY OF WORKING

The workers would roll in only around 1100 hrs, but would promptly go at 1700 hrs.

For many days, there was no body to supervise them. Suddenly one day we would find that nobody has come. When checked with the contractor, to my horror & surprise, even he also was not aware. Home Town persons were not at all aware what was happening on the site. When informed about this, the stock answer was, they would check up with contractor & would arrange start of work & they would come back. But never did they revert back.

So much so, on our insistence when they visited our home & assured that there won’t be stoppage of the work any more, next day again no body turned up!!!

In all till 25th day from starting of the work i.e. 30 May (it has not been completed yet), for total SEVEN days the work stopped & no body took any corrective action.

For the same kind of work, every time a new person would come, be it plumbing or electrical work. And the new person would not know what the earlier one has done. Many a times, the supervisor caught hold of roadside worker & brought him to work, so much for professional way of working!!

Many a times the workers would sit idle, since they did not have the material. Some times they did not know what was to be done. Contractors would promise us that he is on the way to our site & would not turn up. He would assure that the workers are on way, who would not come at all.

Now it is 2 days after the promised 25 days, I still do not know when the work is going to finish. No body is able to tell, neither the contractor nor the Home Town persons.

Now just to finish the work some how, it is being rushed, without caring about the quality – plastering is not done properly, it is being painted without proper preparation of the surface etc. When we insisted that the contractor along with Home Town person should visit our site on 3 July at 1000-1030 hrs, the Home Town person replies that he cannot visit us at that time since his duty hours start at 1130 hrs. So much for the professional approach!!!

C. COMPLETE APATHY

In spite of the repeated feed back, verbal complaints, mails from which even a 4th standard boy would have noticed how much mental agony we were passing through, the Home Town team was not at all bothered, they never made any serious efforts to correct the situation. They visited the site only twice, never replied to the mails, always gave only assurances (& that too false) that situation would improve, never accepted our request for change of the contractor, just did nothing to improve the situation.

So much so, even after their site visits, when it was evident to them that some thing was seriously wrong, they enquired with us about the work being done only for 1-2 days, after that nothing.

In the initial period, I wrote them mails almost daily informing about happenings & goings on on the site, no body bothered to revert, check, talk to me. Fed up with this apathy, in last few days I stopped writing to them, still no phone call to check if everything was all right or has the situation suddenly improved etc.

What I had thought was after giving the complete responsibility to Home Town, I would be saved of all botheration. But in reality, it got multiplied many times had I done it myself.

D. DENIAL OF ACCESS TO HIGHER UPs

Fed up with all this, I am repeatedly requesting to set up my appointment with the Zonal Manager, so that I will make a at least a last ditch effort, to get heard. But that also has not happened till date.

Mr. Biyani, I hope you would appreciate that this is not the way any work should be handled & such incidences would bring a bad name to Home Town. I would sincerely request you to please enquire about this case & ensure that the situation is corrected immediately. If required, I can produce the mails & other details or can meet you or your senior colleagues, whenever required.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Dilip Paranjpe
