We purchased a tracfone about two years ago. Three months or so after getting it, our units suddenly maxed out; and the phone froze up. When my wife called, they told her she won a promotional holiday contest. We received as many free units as our screen would show.
When the airtime was about to expire, we still had a whole lot of minutes - so I bought a small amount of airtime to roll them over. As soon as I activated the card, they froze our phone and would not activate it again unless I sent the phone to them. I refused to do so, as it still reflected the units we owned.
Long story short, No one I talked to could speak English - They were rude to the point of disbelief - They accused us of scamming them - They completely denied any such contest (even though they gave my wife a code to activate the minutes when they told her about it). They even threatened legal action against me.
Three frustrating hours of screaming at some dumb broad with a major attitude for nought. When I asked for an English-speaking associate I'm pretty sure the same lady just tried to change her voice.
I threw the stupid thing away six months later (I think). It just didn't seem worth it, and none of the local news agencies would follow up on it. It was a crappy investment before all this started, anyway.
Lesson learned - Never buy tracfone!
