"Near empty "CARTRIDGES ARE DESIGNED TO stop t he printer regardless of whether you're printing in colour of black.
The best way around this problem (do not buy Brother Products) is to turn off the printer, turn it up vertical (ie through 90 degrees) while in this position switch it on and and the display will read "near empty xxxxx colour" ignore this lay the machine down horizontal again, press copy, black, and off you go.
The cartridge has a float in it which will register empty when 25% full, so by tipping it up it senses that the cartridges are not empty!!
