GAP
Vehicular Noise

Dear Sir/Ma'am,

I read an article in today's Hindu (May 8, '09) that said noise levels are at least 40% above the permissible limit in most urban areas in Chennai. A lot of car/bus/auto and bike horns are extremely loud (obviously custom-made) and just hearing them one can tell they're injurious to the ear. According to the Hindu article one third of traffic policemen suffer from this excessive noise!!! Why isn't there a system in place to monitor both the type and unnecessary usage of vehicular horns? People seem to be bent on overtaking anything and everything... people honk AS SOON AS a traffic light changes red to green... and TOURIST TAXIS are especially prone to excessive honking... Can't the police establish some sort of preventive system? Noise pollution is NOT being taken seriously enough.
