On 16th Feb my bill at Jehangir Hospital (Pune) was Rs. 10932. When I tried to pay through Credit Card, I was told that there would be extra surcharge of 1.4% on the billing amount and since I wasn't carrying enough cash, acceded to paying extra. Although they swiped the card with Rs. 11085/- but had given the bill of Rs. 10932/- only. They have the swiping machine of AXIS Bank.
Now, with VISA and MASTERCARD regulation across the world is "No surcharge should be collected from the Customer (Credit Card or Debit Card Holder)".
But India is still far from truth and such malpractices flourish.
The modus operandi is the issuing bank (in this case AXIS Bank) charges the surcharge from Merchant (in this case Jehangir Hospital, Pune) for keeping their swiping machine at their premises.
Whatever the surcharge percentage has been agreed between AXIS & Jehangir Hospital, Jehangir Hospital i recovering from their patients/ customers.
Will someone challenge such notorious malpractices???
