At 11:45am I was on Bannerghatta Road (Adugodi) going towards Mico. I was overtaking slow moving traffic on my bike when a Bangalore Traffic police Inspector < Nanje Gowda - Inspector with 3 Stars > attached with the Adugodi police station who was walking on the center of the road just turned around and pulled out my key and keeps walking forward.
I push my bike follow him for a distance and then park on the other side.
When I approach him to get the key he just shouts saying I was blocking traffic and that I was overtaking. This was not possible as I was behind him close to the car I was overtaking at just 10kmph and vehicles were flowing from the opposite direction without any problem.
I argued with him for 20 mins and he refused to give the key and just kept directing traffic. He just kept arguing and told me to move aside, he even pushed me aside when I was trying to talk to him.
Calling the Bangalore City traffic control room and Police Commissioners office also did not help.
After 45 mins of waiting he calls me to write a challan for 200Rs
1) Lane Discipline
2) Blocking traffic
He just wanted to show that he has the power to remove the key of a vehicle and that he can get away with fining a citizen because I questioned him and because I called the control room. He also said "If you call the control room you think I will let you go"
This is a case of excessive force by police on citizens who have not broken the law.
Not my Fault:
Overtaking on the right is not a crime.
Overtaking on a road with no Yellow line is not a crime.
Blocking traffic by merely overtaking on a bike is impossible.
Excessive force:
Removing the key of a private vehicle is a crime
Pushing a citizen is a crime
Public getting fined to fuel their silly ego is evident from so many of the complaints I see online against the Bangalore City Traffic police.
