Mobile IMEI numbe

I lost my cell phone and i know that someone else is using it. i have registered FIR with the police to trace down the mobile handset with the given IMEI number. but still i have not yet received any feedback from the company regarding it.

If it is not possible or they are not letting us check the call details made on the lost mobile handset and sim card, given the proof of identity including the drivers licence, voting card etc... WHAT IS THE USE OF THE THE IMEI number???
