Issue of Cheque Book
Inordinate Delay in Issuing Cheque Book

October 14

I am D.Ramchandram, sole Proprietor of Solus Media and has been an account holder of Punjab National Bank, Basheerbagh branch, Hyderabad for the past six months. On finishing cheque leaves, on 29th of September, I made a request and submitted a requisition form in the said branch. I got an SMS message around October 2nd informing me deduction of some amount from my account towards issue of new cheque book. But, I am astonished to note that more than 15days after the submission of the requisition form, the cheque book is not reached me till today i.e October 14.

When contacted the bank branch i.e Basheerbagh, Babukhan Estate branch, we have not got any satisfactory answer. They gave a telephone number of Hyderabad Circle Office and washed off their hands. The Basheerbagh branch was unperturbed with our repeated requests for the cheque book.

We contacted Mr. C.V. Rao of Hyderabad Circle office of PNB on 13th October, on phone and spoke to him. But yet to get any satisfactory response from him. And the problem of cheque book is not yet solved. I am wondering how an account holder survives in business without a cheque book for fortnight. And what kind of a system is this.?

We are living in the age of internet and jet speed. How come a Punjab National Bank boasts of offering modernised services takes so long time to issue a cheque book. How you can it takes customers for granted.

Also it was surprising to learn from your local branch head that normally it takes 7 to 10days to issue a cheque book. The reason cited is printing of name on the cheque book for personalised service. I wonder how one can keep quite without bank transaction for somany days without a cheque book? It is our H.O. Guidelines and we cant do anything came answer from him. It is really surprising how can one tolerate so much delay. It is time for your bank to relook its policy of couriering cheque book from New Delhi.. This process is taking too long time, too many man hours and too much of effort and expenses (printing, courier etc).

I dont know if all banks follow the same procedure. If it is so, we dont mind taking up the matter with Reserve Bank of India. And also sensitise media on the subject so as to enable them to take up the matter appropriately so that customer is benefitted eventually.

I also gather from a recent interview of local Banking Ombudsman of Andhra Pradesh Ms. Deepali Pant Joshi, published in Business Standard in which she said banks have to apologies if they hurt their customers or injured their self-respect by their rude behaviour.

In this light of background i request like minded people and media take up this issue of couriering cheques from Head Offices of respective banks which is cause of concern if the delay is so much. It is high time that banks look into the same and see how best they can resolve this issue much to the satisfaction of the ordinary customer.

Sincerely

D.RAMCHANDRAM
